Spring 2012

Camp Director's Message

A Note from Jim Mazzaferro

Goodness! It’s already the end of February and camp is just around the corner!

We’ve been busy at camp with many projects, but the biggest project we have been working on this off season is the Dining Hall. It was time to re-do the floor- the patches, the tile, the flooring, it all needed to be replaced, and Douglas Dreher with the help of Casey Jones, Mark Gensler, and Nick Ducusin have transformed the Dining Hall into a safe, LEVEL place to eat, rehearse and gather during the summer months. Picutures of the progress have been posted on our Cazadero Music Camp Facebook page, so if you haven’t checked out what is happening at Caz, head on over see what’s in store for this summer.

Conductors are anxious to get back to Caz to work with our campers, and we are excited about the people that will be working with us this summer. New Conductors for this summer include Kellie Bowman ( Middle School A Concert Band), Scott Souza (Young Musicans Concert Band), and Craig Bryant (Junior High Jazz Band). Conductors returning this summer are Mary Dougherty (YM String Orchestra), Mike Stone (MSA Orchestra), Joe Mazzaferro (MSA Jazz), Rachel Nachison (YM Choir), Larry Colon (MSB Concert Band), Karen Wells, (MSB Orchestra), Dr. Jon Brummel (MSB Jazz), and Liz Mazzaferro (MSA and B Choir) who round out the conductors for our younger sessions.

Gerald Willis and Cheryl Yee-Glass (Orchestra), Bobby Rogers and Norm Dea (Concert Band) and Bob Athayde and Craig Bryant (Jazz) are our conductors for our Junior High session. Robert Halseth and Tony Mazzaferro will conduct the High School Concert Band, Michael Boitz and Anthony Parnther will direct the Orchestra, and Mike Galisatus and Patrick Langham will head up our Jazz Band.  It is shaping up to be a great summer of music and music-making at Caz.  I hope that you will be a part of this memorable summer.

Sadly, there will be one person who won’t be with us physically this summer, but will be there with us in spirit.  Last month I was in Fresno to accept the California Band Directors Association Don Schmeer Friend of Music Education Award in honor of our founder, Bob Lutt.  Dr. Jonathan Knight, Cazadero’s Assistant Camp Director, gave a moving tribute to Bob and his vision for Cazadero.  It was a great evening and a fitting tribute to a man who has shaped so many lives through music.

Be a part of Bob’s vision – be a part of Caz this summer and beyond.
